1. Yakub Memon – 1993 Mumbai serial blasts lone death row convict executed

 (i) Yakub Memon, who was convicted for the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts was hanged till death in the Nagpur jail in Maharashtra today morning.

(ii) The Maharashtra State government has decided to hand over the dead body to Memon’s relatives for formal burial.

(iii) Memon, was the first and lone convict of the 100 in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case to have been executed. The death sentence of 11 others have been commuted to life.

2. Cabinet  clears amendment to GST Bill

(i) The union cabinet, head by PM Modi, today cleared amendments to the goods and Services Tax (GST) bill to compensate states for revenue loss for a period of five years after the tax is implemented, as was suggested by the Rajya Sabha select committee.

(ii) The cabinet has so far decided for levy of 1 per cent tax over and above the GST rate by states as well as the ‘band’ rate would be finalised while framing the rules.

(iii) The Cabinet also approved a new Consumer Protection Bill 2015, it is to replace existing law and proposes to set up a regulatory authority to curb unfair trade practices.

3. Cabinet gives it’s nod to NIIF

(i) The cabinet has approved of setting up of National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) with an initial corpus of 20,000 crore rupees as proposed by Finance Minister in the budget for the current fiscal year.

(ii) The objective of setting up NIIF is to augment infrastructure development in the country. It is to provide equity support to non-bank finance companies and financial institutions engaged in infrastructure financing in various sectors. It may also extend equity and debt support to commercially viable infrastructure and other projects.

4. Clive Rice, the former captain of the South African team passes away 

(i) South Africa’s first captain post the apartheid era Clive Rice passed away at 66, he was suffering from cancer.

(ii) Rice was considered South AFrica’s greatest all rounder, good at both batting and bowling.

5.International Tiger day observed globally on July 29th

(i) The 29th July of every year is celebrated as the International Tiger’s Day– with a view to create awareness about the conservation of natural habitats of Tigers, raise awareness and support tiger conservation issues.

(ii) It was first celebrates at Saint Petersburg tiger Summit in 2010 and since promoted at the International Tiger day.
